Make sure that the door locking mechanism is initiated. |

Be ready with your stopwatch. You will need to time the length of the sterilisation holding time. This will be indicated by your steriliser.
When the sterilisation cycle starts begin your stopwatch. |

As with the start of the sterilisation holding time, your steriliser will also inform you when this has completed. When the holding time has elapsed, stop your stopwatch.
In order to pass the test the holding time must have been for a minimum of 3 minutes between a temperature of 134°C and 137°C. The display must also provide an indication of ‘Cycle Complete’. |

You will need to record in the steriliser log book the cycle number, the length of the holding time, the minimum and maximum temperatures and pressure noted during that period. A record of who carried out the test is also required. |
Reasons Why the Test May Fail
Should the test fail a re-test should be performed. If the test fails a second time, a diagnosis of the sterilisation process is required.
The compliance team at Isopharm is also available to discuss the test and test method.
Possible fail reasons for the Automatic Control Test are:
Diagnosing the Process
Every machine in the decontamination process has what is known as an ‘automatic controller’.
The automatic controller progresses each stage of the cycle, from locking the door at cycle start, raising the temperature for the time required, to indicating a cycle complete message to the User. The automatic controller determines and initiates every aspect of the process.
During the quarterly and annual validation, an engineer will check the automatic controller, adjusting or calibrating as required.
If the machine fails a routine automatic control test by the User, this is likely due to a fault with the automatic controller.
This is not something that can be rectified by the User.
If a machine continuously fails this test then it should be removed from the decontamination process and an engineer contacted.
